WHAT DO YOU NEED IN ORDER TO PAINT YOUR MOTORCYCLE GAS TANK?
- Sandpaper, anything between 80, 150, 220 and 400 grit
- Safety glasses
- Painter tape
- Sandpaper block
- Tow strap
- Bondo scrapper
- Olds sheets or newspaper
- 2-part catalyzed clear coat
- Green self-etching primer
- Utility Knife
STEP BY STEP GUIDE ON HOW TO PAINT YOUR MOTORCYCLE GAS TANK
STEP 1 – Get the tank off your bike. You have to make sure you have closed off all valves and whatnot so that once you take it off-gas isn’t leaking everywhere. Even though each bike comes with its own unique design, you will still have to take off your bike seat before you can remove your motorcycle gas tank. If you have a lot of gas inside, it’s better for you to empty out the gas tank.
Before you can take the gas tank out of the frame of your motorcycle you will need to unscrew a bolt. If you experience any difficulty while trying to remove the gas tank, just do a google search on how to unscrew your gas tank and you`ll get numerous how-to that will guide you. . Alternatively, you can refer to your manufacturer’s manual if you have one.
STEP 2 – Remove all existing paint– Use a sandblaster to sand to remove all existing paint in the tank until it turns to bare metal. Sandblasting might leave some cracks and holes, so make sure you use a mental filler to fill in cracks and a body filler to fill in the holes. Use 180 grit sandpaper to smoothen the surface until it is smooth to the touch.
STEP 3 – Cover All Openings With a primer Tape and use a utility knife to trim the tape– Cover any areas where the rubber gasket contact with the gas tank. Covering this area properly prevents the paint from getting inside the tank. Make sure you cover the filter neck area and the petcock assembly-where the fuel gauge mounts to the tank.
STEP 4- Apply Around 5 coats of primer- Once you are done applying one coat of primer, you need to allow it to dry. Once that coat is dry, sand it and apply another coat. Do this until you have 5 layers.
STEP 5 – Apply several coats of base paint- Get the automotive spray paint you bought and start applying. After applying one coat, allow it to dry before you do the next coating. Also, sand with 280 grit sandpaper in between each coat.
STEP 6- Apply 2-4 coat od clear coat polymer – After applying clear coat polymer, allow it to dry. The polymer coating will protect you’re your tank in case gasoline drips on it while using a gasoline pump.
